The coronavirus infection rate in Bolton has climbed to more than 300 per 100,000, the latest data shows.

The latest Public Health England figures show the transmission rate in the borough now stands at 301.5.

This is more than 14 times the national average for England of 21 per 100,000.

A programme of surge testing is continuing in Bolton after a rapid and dramatic rise in positive cases thought to be driven by the B.1.617.2 strain of the virus, often called the Indian variant.

Yesterday (Monday), Health Secretary Matt Hancock said 19 people were currently being treated for the virus at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
